What Does an SLP Do?
There are SO many areas we can specialize in! An SLP, or Speech-Language Pathologist, works on a variety of communication and swallowing disorders. Here are some areas that SLP’s commonly address:
Speech Disorders
Language Disorders
Cognitive-Communication Disorders
Swallowing Disorders (Dysphagia)
Social Communication Disorders
Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)
Hearing Loss and Auditory Rehabilitation
SLP’s focus on social communication, facilitating conversation skills and non-verbal cue understanding. We assist those who can't solely rely on verbal communication, developing AAC systems like communication boards or sign language. SLPs also provide auditory support for hearing-impaired individuals, and educate families and professionals about communication disorders. We operate in various settings, from schools to private practices.
In addition to direct therapy, SLPs also play a crucial role in educating families, caregivers, and other professionals about communication disorders and providing strategies to support individuals in their daily lives.
